The National Cancer Registry Program of Egypt was initiated through a protocol of collaboration between the ministries of Communication and Information Technology, Health, and Higher Education. The first phase of the program started in 2008 and covered Aswan Governorate. Staring 2009, Population-based cancer registries were established in Menia, Behira and Damietta Governorates.
Damietta governorate is located about 200 kilometers to the north of Cairo, at the intersection of the Eastern branch of the Nile and the Mediterranean Sea. It is an urban/ rural governorate with approximately 1.2 million-population (2009) that has a structure similar to that of the entire country. It consists of 5 administrative districts with Damietta city as the capital where facilities for cancer management are mainly located in Damietta Cancer Center.
