The SINASC system, or "Sistema de Informações Sobre Nascidos Vivos," provides microdata for live births by sex, birth place, birth weight, age and residence of mother, plus other variables. The Secretariat of Health Surveillance, Ministry of Health manages the Live Birth Information System (SINASC).

A nationally standardized document, known as a “declaration of live birth” (DN) is required for all live births, whether the delivery occurs in the home or hospital. Data from these documents is processed at the municipal level and reported to a national database.

Prior to the creation of SINASC, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) was responsible for the collection of live birth data in Brazil.
