Since starting in June 2009, AfriPop has produced detailed population distribution maps for Africa, freely available for download here in the GHDx and on the AfriPop Web site. The project, headed by Dr. Andrew Tatem and Dr. Catherine Linard, uses settlement maps derived from satellite imagery combined with land cover maps to reallocate spatial population count data. The population data primarily comes from censuses from 1993-2010, and are projected to 2010 using UN urban and rural growth rates.

News and updates related to AfriPop are available on the AfriPop home page.  The site also provides details as to publications, methods and sources. AfriPop data should be cited by referencing the paper, Population Distribution, Settlement Patterns and Accessibility across Africa in 2010, published in PLoS ONE.
