Summary

The 1998 Zambia Sexual Behavior Survey (ZSBS) was the first of this series in Zambia. The main objective of the survey was to collect indicators of knowledge, attitude and sexual behavior associated with HIV, AIDS and STDs.

Two questionnaires were used, one for households and one for individuals. A total of 1,943 households were included in the sample with a response rate of 97%. A total of 1,655 males and 2,040 females were enumerated giving a response rate of 92% and 95% respectively. Males and females age 15 to 49 years were included in the sample.

An STD facility survey and a mystery STD patient study were also conducted separately, but in collaboration with the ZSBS. The facility survey was to assess the quality of STD services in Zambia and the mystery STD patient study, which occurred only in Lusaka and Copperbelt, aimed to collect information on STD management by private practititioners. These data collection efforts were done between July and August of 1998.
