Summary

The 1976 National Survey of Family Growth was based on a multistage probability sample of 8,611 women 15-44 years of age living in the coterminous United States  who were either married, previously married, or who were never married but had offspring presently living in the household. The 1976 NFGS produces estimates concerning: factors affecting pregnancy (including sexual activity, contraceptive use, and infertility); the medical care associated with contraception, infertility, and childbirth; marriage and divorce; adoption and care of non-biological children; attitudes about sex, childbearing, and marriage.

The 1976 NSFG was the second cycle of the survey. Interviews were conducted in person by female interviewers.
