Summary

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is an ongoing research survey designed to measure the health and nutritional status of the population of the United States. The 1971-1975 NHANES (NHANES I) included a nationally representative sample of about 23,808 persons age 1 to 74 who were both interviewed and examined, and another 8,165 individuals who were interviewed but not examined. NHANES uses a combination of interviews, physical examinations, and laboratory tests to collect data. All persons 25-74 years of age who completed a medical examination during NHANES I (n = 14,407) also constituted the cohort for the NHANES Epidemiological Followup Study.
