Summary

The 2012-2013 United States National Adult Tobacco Survey was a telephone survey conducted by the CDC of a nationally representative sample of non-institutionalized adults ages 18 and older. The aim of the survey was to measure prevalence of tobacco use, as well as the factors that encourage and discourage tobacco use. The survey was conducted once before in 2009-2010 as a standalone collection effort. The 2012-2013 survey featured a revised questionnaire, which added questions on the topics of tobacco product advertising and marketing. The revision aimed for the data to be more representative of aspects such as purchasing behavior, addiction, cessation, secondhand smoke, and demographics, as well as make it more useful in the evaluation of new public health initiatives regarding tobacco control and prevention. A total sample size of 60,192 cases were used in the weighting and data analysis, comprising 57,999 fully completed interviews and 2,198 partially completed interviews.
