Summary 

The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) collects data on the frequency of health services, prices and methods of payment for health services, the cost and coverage of health insurance, demographic information, and health status and conditions. The panel design of the survey consists of three rounds of interviewing over two calendar years, with each MEPS panel drawn from a subsample of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from the prior year.

MEPS includes three main components: 

• Household Component (HC): self-reported data on health care services, health care access, health status, conditions.

• Insurance Component (IC): health insurance information collected from employers of the respondents in the HC.

• Medical Provider Component (MPC): information collected from health care facilities including fees and charges for services and methods of payment.
