Summary

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation publishes hospital providers and service use data on an annual basis from the American Hospital Association. The Hospital Beds per 1,000 Population by Ownership Type dataset includes staffed beds for community hospitals, which are defined as all nonfederal, short-term general, and specialty hospitals whose facilities and services are available to the public. Community hospitals represent 85% of all hospitals. The data does not include alcoholism and other chemical dependency hospitals, institutions for the mentally retarded, psychiatric hospitals, long term care hospitals, or federal hospitals. Data is not applicable in states where state/local government, non-profit, or for-profit hospitals do not exist.
