The Hospital Beds per 1,000 Population by Ownership Type dataset includes staffed beds for community hospitals, which are defined as all nonfederal, short-term general, and specialty hospitals whose facilities and services are available to the public. Community hospitals represent 85% of all hospitals. The data does not include alcoholism and other chemical dependency hospitals, institutions for the mentally retarded, psychiatric hospitals, long term care hospitals, or federal hospitals.
