The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is a state conducted telephone survey. The BRFSS began in 1984 and gathers information from adults (ages 18 and over) on health risk behaviors, preventive health practices, and health care access primarily related to chronic disease and injury. As of 2011, the BRFSS has collected information through both landline and cellular telephone surveys.
