Summary

This annual report contains statistics on pregnancies, births, and newborns from 1973 to 2012, based on data in the Swedish Medical Birth Register. It also provides tabulations about in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments and their outcomes from 1991 to 2011, taken from the National Quality Register for Assisted Reproduction (Q-IVF). Specific topics include the age, body mass index and smoking habits of mothers, mode of delivery and use of pain relief, and the birth weights of infants.

The Swedish Medical Birth Register was established in 1973 and the National Quality Register for Assisted Reproduction was created in 2007. The first report in this series, combining data from both registers, was published in 2009.
