Summary

This survey was carried out as part of the European Health Survey System, an effort to collect health data that are comparable across European Union countries. A variety of data collection tools are involved in the system including the European Health Examination Survey, the European Health Interview Survey, and the Mini European Health Module administered as part of the EU Statistics on Income and Living Conditions Surveys.

The 2009 survey in Spain was an interview survey. Data were collected through a household questionnaire on household characteristics, and an individual questionnaire. The individual questionnaire contained the following modules: sociodemographic characteristics; health status; health determinants; health care use and services; health care expenditures; and tobacco, alcohol, and drug use. The nationally representative sample was approximately 46,248 households.
