Individual level deaths are coded with 18 variables, including type of death (individual or stillborn), age, sex, place of death, province of residence, immediate cause of death, underlying cause of death, and other conditions leading to death. Values for smoking status and pregnancy status were often unspecified or unknown. The microdata is based on death notification forms received from the Department of Home Affairs. Summary reports on Mortality and Causes of Death for 1997-2003, 2003-2004, and 2005 are also available from Statistics South Africa.
