Summary

The Saving Mothers Report provides numbers and causes of maternal deaths in South Africa, as well as data on associated risk factors, including HIV infection. Most of these reported deaths occurred at health facilities; only a small percentage were recorded as home deaths.

Tables in this report show underlying causes of death by age group and primary causes of death by province. The Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths (CEMD) system began in South Africa in 1997.
