Summary 

Mortality and causes of death in South Africa is an annual statistical release. It provides total number of deaths by cause and number of deaths by sex, age group, province, and ten leading causes in 2006. The statistics are based on death notification forms received from the Department of Home Affairs. In the coding process, the underlying causes were determined by using the Automated Classification of Medical Entities (ACME) software program.

In this release, number of deaths excludes stillbirths. The report acknowledges that the data have the following limitations: under-registration in rural areas and among children, incomplete information on notification forms, and certification errors. Apart from this report, Statistics South Africa offers microdata on Causes of Death 2006.
