The survey sample was comprised of the non-institutional population in the country, excluding populations such as those in hospital care, old age homes, orphanages, boarding schools, prisons, and refugee camps. The final sample size consisted of 1,370,809 dwelling units from 93,427 enumeration areas. The Community Survey was initiated to provide data at lower geographical areas in South Africa.
