Summary

The National Sample Survey (NSS) is a socioeconomic survey conducted in annual rounds with a cycle of rotating topics. The 63rd Round (July 2006 to June 2007) included surveys of household consumer expenditure and enterprises in the service sector.

Survey samples were 33,146 rural and 30,583 urban households for consumer expenditure and 190,282 enterprises for the service sector. The surveys were representative at the national and state levels, excluding select areas due to geographic remoteness.

The consumer expenditure survey report calculated monthly per capita consumer expenditure by dividing monthly household expenditure by household size. The service sector covers hotels and restaurants, transport, communication, real estate activities, education, health, and other community activities. Mass transportation, commercial banking, and government services were not included.
