Summary

The National Sample Survey (NSS) is a socioeconomic survey conducted in annual rounds with a cycle of rotating topics. The 57th Round (July 2001 to June 2002) included surveys of household consumer expenditure and the unorganized service sector

Samples were 25,505 rural and 37,123 urban households for the consumer expenditure survey and 244,376 enterprises for the service sector survey. The surveys were constructed to be representative at the national and state levels, excluding select areas due to geographic remoteness.

The unorganized service sector survey collected data including the number of enterprises, fixed assets, number of workers, operating expenses, loans, ownership, types of operations, number of months of operation, etc.
