The 54th Round (January 1998 to June 1998) included surveys on household consumer expenditure, common property resources in villages, and sanitation and hygiene facilities. Sample sizes were as follows: 19,936 rural and 6,983 urban households for the consumer expenditure survey, 78,990 rural and 31,323 urban for the sanitation and hygiene survey, and 78,990 rural households for the common property resources survey. The surveys were representative at national and state levels, but select areas were excluded due to geographic remoteness.
