Summary

The National Sample Survey (NSS) is a socioeconomic survey conducted in annual rounds with a cycle of rotating topics. The 50th Round (July 1993 to June 1994) included surveys on consumer expenditure and employment and unemployment.

Sample sizes were as follows: 115,354 households for the consumer expenditure survey, and 356,351 rural and 208,389 urban individuals for the employment survey. The surveys were representative at national and state levels, but select areas were excluded due to geographic remoteness or unfavorable field conditions. Only three districts in the state of Jammu and Kashmir were surveyed (Jammu, Kathua, and Udhampur); the nine other districts were not included in either the state or national samples.
