Summary

Established in 1993, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) is an agency of the European Union responsible for collecting, analyzing, harmonizing, and disseminating sound and comparable information on drugs in Europe for the benefit of policymakers and researchers. The Centre oversees and obtains information from the “Reitox Network,” which is comprised of EU member states and their individual national drug monitoring centres. Each country constitutes a “national focal point” in the network and issues an annual national report to the EMCDDA. Topics covered include national drug law, drug use in the population, preventive interventions, treatment and rehabilitation, secondary health issues, and the impact of drug related crime.
