The Dominican Republic's fifth national census was conducted in January 1970.  The census used a long form and short form. The long form, which included questions on employment, fertility and migration characteristics, was distributed to half of the urban population and one quarter of the rural population. As in the 1960 census, the country was divided into 26 provinces and the national district and then further subdivided into municipal districts and zones.
