Summary

The CRANE Database is a national register established in 2000; it collects data on births, cleft diagnosis, and cleft-related treatment and outcomes for children at five years of age.

Data are submitted by the 15 hospitals providing surgical treatment to cleft patients in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This report presents data on outcomes for children born 2004-2008, and for registration of children born 2004-2013. Completeness varies among hospitals but is estimated at 95% for registration; outcomes data are less complete. Data from the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) on additional surgical procedures for children born 1997-2004 in England are included, up to age seven.

Outcomes include height and weight, decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft), Five Year Old Index scores (2004-2008 births), and speech assessment using Cleft Audit Protocol for Speech - Augmented (CAPS-A) for 2006-2007 births. Cleft type is defined according to LAHSAL codes.
