Summary

Censuses provide population numbers, household or family size and composition, and information on sex and age distribution. They often include other demographic, economic and health-related topics as well. The 1973 Costa Rica de jure census collected data through face-to-face interviews on  housing, household demographics, employment for individuals 12 and older, education for those 6 and older, migration, and fertility for women 15 and older. In addition to the population and housing questionnaires, an agricultural questionnaire was administered to those who owned or rented land. The census day was May 14, 1973 but fieldwork continued after this day. A 10% sample of households from the census (186,762 individuals) is available through IPUMS International at the University of Minnesota. Dwellings are not available in the microdata sample. Refer to the IPUMS website for guidelines on citing database versions.
