The data are broken down by age, sex, and cause of death, and tabulations are also divided into urban and rural categories. Surveillance occured at 161 voluntary sites in urban and rural areas, covering less than 1% of China's total population. Data provided by the China CDC for 2008-2012 are a combination of DSP data and aggregated data from the county level death registration system.
