Summary 

The Disease Surveillance Points (DSP) 1997 contains mortality and morbidity data for China. The data are broken down by age, sex, and cause of death (with ICD-9 codes), and tabulations are also divided into urban and rural categories. Surveillance occured at 143 voluntary sites in urban and rural areas, and findings were analyzed from 133 of those sites, based on quality of data. In 1997, the DSP covered a population of 10,123,860 people and 51,759 deaths were reported. The adjusted death rate was 591.19 per 100,000 people. The two leading causes of death were cerebrovascular disease (adjusted death rate of 184.14 per 100,000) and COPD (adjusted death rate of 110.17 per 100,000).
