Summary

This report presents expenditure information for federal, state, and municipal governments. State information is presented individually and by large geographic regions. Municipal figures refer to state capitals and metropolitan regions for years 1996-1997. For 1998, counties with increased economic and demographic development were included. Spending is broadly broken out in the following areas of function: general public services, national defense, public safety, economic development, environmental protection, housing and urban development, health, education, cultural services and sports, and social protection. Health spending is divided into four areas: administration and support, studies and research, inpatient and outpatient services, and public health services. Values are presented in US dollars. This information is compatible with the National Accounts System and the Regionalization of Public Sector Transactions also produced by the Brazilian Institute of Geography & Statistics.
