Summary 

This is part of the 2000 Annual Report of the National Birth Defect Prevention Network (NBDPN), published in a special issue of Teratology (Volume 61, Issue 1-2). The birth defects surveillance program data reports state-specific data from 29 participating population-based registries on prevalence numbers for 45 congenital anomalies from January 1, 1989 through December 31, 1996. Data are broken down by race/ethnicity for each defect, and by maternal age for trisomy 21 (commonly referred to as Down's syndrome), trisomy 18, and trisomy 13. Collection of data on live births only, live and stillbirths, or all pregnancy outcomes differs by state. As with other annual reports, there is also an accompanying directory of state birth defects surveillance programs.
