Summary

The South Australian Birth Defects Register (SABDR) collects data on children born after January 1, 1986 in South Australia diagnosed with a birth defect (a structural or functional abnormality with its origin before birth) in the first five years of life.

The 2006 report presents data reported to the registry by March 31st, 2007. Data are broken out by diagnostic category using the ICD-9 based British Paediatric Association Code, and given as numbers and rates per 1,000 by year or year range of birth. The denominator used is total numbers of live births and stillbirths, excluding terminations before 20 weeks. Numerators are births and terminations with birth defects. Data are reported by residence of mother at time of birth, by sex, by mother's race, by diagnostic category, and by source of notification among other factors. Also incorporated is the Annual Report of Prenatal Diagnosis in South Australia, 2006.
