Summary

This survey, also known as SABE, was conducted simultaneously in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Bridgetown (Barbados), São Paulo (Brazil), Santiago (Chile), Havana (Cuba), Mexico City (Mexico), and Montevideo (Uruguay) to gather information on the health of elderly populations in these countries. People 60 years and older were interviewed with an emphasis on those 80 and older. Data was collected on the interviewee's self-assessment of chronic and acute illnesses, as well as physical and mental impairments and disabilities, history of principal chronic conditions, anthropomorphic measurements, access to and use of healthcare, and the extent of family assistance. In Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay, extra modules were included in the survey to measure demand for markets and goods for the elderly.
