The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) is an institution for scientific research and development in the biological sciences. It is named for its founder, physician and epidemiologist, Dr. Oswaldo Cruz. It was originally founded in 1898 as the Federal SeroTherapy Institute and was dedicated to developing vaccines and a serum against the bubonic plague. Overtime, the institution's foci expanded into research and experimential medicine, and health and sanitation promotion regarding outbreaks and epidemics.
