Summary

The National Sample Survey (NSS) is a socioeconomic survey conducted in annual rounds with a cycle of rotating topics. The 62nd Round (July 2005 to June 2006) included household consumer expenditure, employment and unemployment, and unorganized manufacturing sector surveys.

Sample sizes were as follows: 18,992 rural and 20,444 urban households for the consumer expenditure survey; 37,975 rural and 40,904 urban for the employment survey, and 82,897 enterprises for the manufacturing survey. The surveys were representative at national and state levels, but select areas were excluded due to geographic remoteness.

The consumer expenditure survey report calculated monthly per capita expenditure by dividing monthly household expenditure by household size. The employment survey included industry and occupation codes and the education level of respondents.
