Summary

This survey gathered national information on family planning practices and attitudes and awareness of contraceptives, with condoms investigated through a larger number of questions. This survey also had the purpose of observing trends since the first All-India Family Planning Survey was conducted in 1970. The sample size was 34,831 married, co-habitating couples with a wife between the ages of 15 through 49 years. The participants of the survey were from 238 towns and 805 villages throughout the country. The state of Assam and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were excluded from this survey.

The data were collected through in-person interviews in the home. The themes of the interview included family composition and attitudes about family size, sociodemographic characteristics, awareness of contraceptives, use of contraceptives, and perceptions of the national Family Welfare Program.
