Summary

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is an ongoing research survey designed to measure the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. The 1976-1980 NHANES included 20,322 individuals who were both interviewed and examined, and another 4,964 individuals who were interviewed but not examined, in the age range 6 months through 74 years of age. The survey used a combination of interviews, physical examinations, and laboratory tests to collect data; interviews included questions concerning demographics, diet, conditions, and health status information, while the examination component consists of medical, dental, and physiological measurements. Blood, urine, and other samples were collected for a variety of laboratory tests.
