Summary

The European Hospital Morbidity Database (HMDB) allows for the analysis and comparison of morbidity and hospital activity for European countries. Years of coverage vary by country. Published by the WHO Regional Office for Europe, it contains hospital discharge data by detailed diagnosis, age, and sex. Diagnosis codes use ICD-10, ICD-9, or ISHMT. The data are submitted by European countries to the regional office and usually come from the national health insurance system. The data may not include private hospitals or may only include those covered by the national health insurance system. In addition, treatment of day-cases and multi-episode cases may vary.
