Summary
The Special Survey of Deaths was an effort to determine cause-specific mortality data based on the deaths recorded by the Sample Registration System during 2001 to 2003. Causes of death were determined using a form of the Representative, Re-sampled, Routine Household Interview of Mortality with Medical Evaluation (RHIME) method of verbal autopsy. Households that had reported deaths as part of the SRS surveys in 2001-2003 were interviewed and ICD-10 causes were assigned by independent physicians based on recorded responses. The Special Survey of Deaths was conducted for most states between May and October of 2004, except for those states that implemented RHIME as part of the SRS surveys as of December 2002.
