Cambodia National Tuberculosis Prevalence Survey 2002

The purpose of this first national tuberculosis prevalence survey was to obtain data on smear-positive and culture-positive tuberculosis in adults and children, to determine the prevalence of tuberculosis, to create estimates for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) scar rates in children, and to analyze health behavior and symptoms.

The data were gathered through exams at mobile units and in-person interviews. Patients aged 10 years and older had chest x-rays. If the results of the x-rays or the interview showed suspected TB symptoms, then two sputum samples were taken. The BCG scar assessments were performed, also at the mobile sites, on children older than 3 months and younger than 15 years. The sample size for this survey was 30,032 individuals. Subjects found to have bacteriologically positive results for TB were re-interviewed about symptoms and medical history.
