Summary 

Data for the fifth Sri Lankan HIES were collected to identify income and expenditure patterns, average consumption, and incidences of poverty. Only a preliminary report is available from the Department of Census and Statistics. Like the HIES in 1990-91 and 1995-96, this survey didn't cover the Northern and Eastern provinces because a proper sampling frame could not be established. However, the Northern and Eastern provinces were surveyed separately beginning in September 2002.
