South Africa Vital Registration - Causes of Death 1997-2005

This dataset covers 4,257,411 registered deaths in South Africa from 1997 to 2005. Individual level deaths are coded with 18 variables, including type of death (individual or stillborn), age, sex, place of death, province of residence, immediate cause of death, underlying cause of death, and other conditions leading to death. Values for smoking status and pregnancy status were often unspecified or unknown. The microdata is based on death notification forms received from the Department of Home Affairs.
