This survey was the first South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (SANHANES). The purpose of this survey was to gather data in order to assess the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in all age groups. The specific NCDs focused on were hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. This first cross-sectional SANHANES was also undertaken to develop baseline data and select a 5,000 household cohort for future longitudinal studies.
The data were collected through interviews and medical examinations. The interviews focused on diet, habits, sociodemographics, and health status. Physicians performed exams that included a step test and blood pressure. Clinical staff collected blood samples, height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, bioelectrical impedance data, and respiratory function data. Diagnoses were made based on biomarker testing.
The study collected 25,532 interviews. Of those interviewed, 12,025 received physical exams.
