Summary

The purpose of this survey was to collect data in order to aid in the establishment of a noncommunicable disease surveillance system. This survey was conducted as part of the STEPS Noncommunicable Disease Risk Factors Survey, a series that employs methodology developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The data were collected through interviews, physical measurements, and blood samples.

Subjects were interviewed on the topics of tobacco use, diet, alcohol use, and sociodemographic characteristics. Measurements of height, weight, arm circumference, and blood pressure were taken. Blood samples were gathered in order to assess fasting blood glucose and cholesterol.

In Ghana, the survey was performed in all of the districts within the Greater Accra Region (GAR). A multi-stage stratified cluster design was used for the sampling methodology. In total, 2,662 adults ages 25-64 years participated in the survey.
