The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is a state conducted telephone survey. BRFSS began in 1984 and gathers information on health risk behaviors, preventive health practices, and health care access primarily related to chronic disease and injury. BRFSS is conducted in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam.

In 1999, 50 states and Puerto Rico and Washington DC conducted the BRFSS; a list of data available by state and year is available on the BRFSS site.
