UCMIS Replication Archive ========================= This folder contains analysis code and data files to replicate the estimation of Iraqi war deaths from the paper "Mortality in Iraq Associated with the 2003-2011 War and Occupation: Findings from a National Cluster Sample Survey by the University Collaborative Iraq Mortality Study" published by Hagopian et al PLOS Medicine in Oct 2013. Contents -------- replicate_household_module_analysis.ipynb replicate_sibling_module_analysis.ipynb data/ hh_deaths.csv hh_roster.csv pop.csv siblings.csv Description ----------- replicate_household_module_analysis.ipynb --- This IPython Notebook file contains the necessary code to replicate the analysis of the household module of the survey, which found that during the U.S.-led invasion and occupation of Iraq from 2003 to 2011, for every three people killed by violence, two died as a result of the collapse of the infrustructure that supports health care, clean water, nutrition, and transportation. replicate_sibling_module_analysis.ipynb --- This IPython Notebook file contains the necessary code to replicate the analysis of the sibling module of the survey, which found that 187,000 adults aged 15-60 died due to the war, of which 132,000 deaths were caused directly by war-related violence. data/ --- This folder contains comma-separated-value (csv) files necessary for the analysis replication. hh_deaths.csv --- this csv file contains the following columns: cluster - survey cluster number hh - household number in cluster gov - governate of cluster sex - sex of decedent mod - month of death yod - year of death cod - cause of death death_cert - did respondant have a death certificate war_death - Y/N war_cod - external cause of war-related injury respo - responsible party distance - distance from household of injury year_hh_formed - year household formed hh_roster.csv cluster - survey cluster number hh - household number in cluster gov - governate of cluster replacement - Y if this household was a replacement year_hh_formed - year household formed age - age of household member sex - sex of household member present - was household member present? othersib - does this household member have other siblings present in the household? sib - did this household member complete the sibling module of the survey? pop.csv year - 1997 to 2012 sex - male/female age - five-year age groups population - estimated Iraqi population for this time, sex, age-group siblings.csv id - cluster/household/respondent identifier sibid - sibling identified (0 = respondent) sex - sex of sibling yob - year of birth of sibling alive - is sibling alive? mod - month of death yod - year of death gov - governate where death occured cod - cause of death war_death - was death war-related? war_cod - war-related cause of death respo - who do you think was responsible? cluster - cluster of respondent ageresp - age of respondent othersib - does this respondent have other siblings in the household? othersibtot - number of siblings in household
