Australia National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey 2001
General Info
The Australia National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS) 2001 was conducted in association with the 2001 National Health Survey. Building on the NHS, the NATSIHS was designed to be a separate survey, occurring every six years, that will be timed to coincide with every second NHS (NHS are conducted every three years).
A total of 3,198 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and children were included in the 2001 NHS(I) sample. The 2001 NHS(I) sample was combined with the 483 Indigenous Australians enumerated in the 2001 NHS(G) sample to provide a total sample of 3,681 Indigenous persons. The survey collected data about the health status of the population, use of health services, and lifestyle risk factors. Information on long-term conditions was self-reported. Questions on a number of lifestyle behaviors covered smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise, obesity, and dietary habits.
