Summary
The sample design of the Turkey National Maternal Mortality Study 2005 was a weighted, stratified probability sample, using the province as the sampling unit. Maternal mortality data were collected by asking village leaders and cemetery officials to identify all burials by age and sex; a field team then investigated all deaths of females ages 15-49 using hospital records and verbal autopsy. The study also involved qualitative research to examine the completeness of maternal mortality reporting and registration.
