Summary
The NHDS was conducted annually from 1965 to 2010 by the National Center for Health Statistics. This survey collected medical and demographic information from a sample of discharge records selected from a national sample of non-Federal, short-stay hospitals (where stay average is less than 30 days). The NHDS was succeeded in 2011 by the National Hospital Care Survey (NHCS), which combined the data collected by the NHDS with data collected by the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS).
