The National Sample Survey on Child Mortality covered 92,059 live births and 505,859 children ages 1-4 in 1991. For children under five, the four leading causes of death were neonatal diseases, respiratory diseases, accidents, and congenital malformations. The under-5 mortality rate was 55.1 per 1000.
