The 1990 Population and Housing Census covered household size, education, occupations, number of births and living children, and deaths. Responses to household questionnaires were collected in every municipality, province, and autonomous area in China, excluding Hong Kong and Macao. The census counted over 1.1 billion people. A long-form questionnaire was administered to 11 million people, a 1% sample of the total population. The 1% sample data was released by the China Population and Information Research Center.
