Summary

The 1991 Zambia Household Expenditure and Income Survey (HEIS) focused on collecting data regarding food expenditures, household expenditures, income, self-employment business expenses, and participation in the mealie meal food assistance program. Data were collected by an enumerator who visited each household every week for four consecutive weeks. Income and food expenditure data were collected every week, whereas household characteristics and non-food expenditure data were collected only once during the 4-week period.

A multistage, stratified randomized-cluster sampling design was used. The sample included a total of 2,930 households from 17 out of 54 districts, and the analytical sample was 2,439 households.

Some results from this survey were compiled into reports by the Iowa State University, Center for Agricultural and Rural Development. Additionally, a brief preliminary report may be available through the library system.
