Summary

The Fertility and Family Surveys (FFS) were conducted in 23 United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Region countries from 1989 to 1999. The template survey includes 10 core and 4 optional modules. Topics include household characteristics, partnerships, fertility, and use of contraception. Each country developed a unique questionnaire derived from the standardized template. Sampling and data collection varied across the participating countries. The FFS was conducted by the Bulgaria Academy of Science within the country, and a total of 2,367 interviews were completed by women ages 18-49. Due to budgetary constraints, males were not included and large portions of the standard questionnaire were removed.
